This is done by modifying the\u00a0<strong>LocalSettings.php<\/strong>\u00a0file (a file that is included in every install in which it is possible to provide configurations details).<\/p>\n<p>By default, Mediawiki allows anonymous users to create pages and edit pages in the wiki. The modifications change this in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Anonymous users cannot edit existing pages<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Anonymous users cannot create pages<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"level1\">\n<div class=\"li\">Registered users must click the confirmation link in the registration email in order to edit or create pages<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This approach should drastically reduce unsolicited content and comments on Mediawiki installations. One further step that administrator might take is to turn registration off after a predetermined amount of time. Users must create accounts by this date; after that, the settings are changed so that registrations are no longer open.<\/p>\n<p>To add this setting, you must edit\u00a0<strong>LocalSettings.php<\/strong>\u00a0in your Mediawiki install:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"vspace\">Login to cPanel and browse to your\u00a0<a class=\"urlextern\" title=\"https:\/\/vassarspaces.net\/support\/cpanel\/accessing-your-files-through-the-file-manager\" href=\"http:\/\/vassarspaces.net\/support\/uncategorized\/accessing-your-files-through-the-file-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">File Manager<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-114\" src=\"http:\/\/vassarspaces.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-at-12.37-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"759\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vassarspaces.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-at-12.37-PM.png 759w, https:\/\/vassarspaces.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-30-at-12.37-PM-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/li>\n<li class=\"vspace\">In the File Manager, browse to the folder within<strong> public_html<\/strong> that contains your Mediawiki install. If you installed the wiki at the root of your domain, you won&#8217;t need to go any further than public_html. If you installed the wiki in a subdomain or subdirectory, you&#8217;ll need to find the directory that is associated with that space.<\/li>\n<li class=\"vspace\">Locate\u00a0<strong>LocalSettings.php. <\/strong>Once selecting the file, click <strong>download<\/strong>\u00a0in the top menu bar to download the file as a backup before proceeding.
